Chinese Culture: Birthday Celebration Longevity Noodle


Nowadays, it is becoming more and more popular to celebrate birthday in western style in China, which normally with wrapped birthday presents and sweet cake with candles. However, traditional Chinese birthday celebration has some distinct customs.

长寿面 (cháng shòu miàn) [Longevity noodle] is an indispensable dish in birthday celebrations. Because 面 (miàn) [noodle] is long and continuous in shape, it symbolizes longevity and good health to have noodles in birthday celebrations. While enjoying the delicious长寿面 (cháng shòu miàn), try not to break off the noodle when you are picking up, because the longer it is, the longer it suggests the life will be.

Although长寿面 (cháng shòu miàn) is served in various ways in different areas in China, particularly vary between the north and south, it is still a traditional custom to have family members and close friends to eat长寿面 (cháng shòu miàn) and to bring the best wishes of longevity to the person who celebrating his or her birthday.
