How To Use a Chopsticks Properly: Chopsticks 筷子Etiquette

A lot of people can use Chinese 筷子[kuài zi] (chopsticks), but not necessarily they know the good manners of using筷子[kuài zi]. Today, we are going to talk about筷子[kuài zi] etiquette.

A big taboo of using筷子[kuài zi] is place 筷子[kuài zi] vertically on the bowl. Because it resembles the ritual of incense-burning to the dead. When not using your chopsticks, place them across your bowl or on the chopstick holder.

Also, do not try to use 筷子[kuài zi] to create music with your bowl. Playing with 筷子[kuài zi] is considered bad manners. Actually, it is commonly known as what beggars would do in order to grab attention from passerby.

Moreover, always pick something close to you and try not to dig into the plate and search for a particular ingredient that you like.

Another thing needs to be careful when using筷子[kuài zi] is do not stab food with 筷子[kuài zi] like a spear.

Lastly, try not to drop the chopsticks on the ground. Some elderly people say that it will bring you bad luck while there are some others say that you will be poor if you do so. However, this is a very old tradition. If it happens by accident, just apologize and ask for a replacement.
