About 蹴鞠 [cù jū] Ancient Chinese Sport
蹴鞠 [cù jū] is an old Chinese sport. It is a competitive game that requires kicking a ball through an opening into a net. The ball that is used in this sport is made with a kind of leather ball stuffed with feathers, and it is not allowed to use the hands during the game. It is regarded as the first 足球 [zú qiú] (football).
The form of 蹴鞠 [cù jū] is similar to that of modern 足球 [zú qiú], but it consists of different types of playing modes and skills. The game was initially invented for military training purposes. During the Han Dynasty (206 BC-AD 220), the popularity of 蹴鞠 [cù jū] spread from the army to the royal courts and upper classes. 蹴鞠 [cù jū] games were standardized and rules were also established during this period of time. In the Tang Dynasty (618-907), 蹴鞠 [cù jū] game significantly developed and spread to Japan and Korea in the east and Europe in the west.

Meaning of Numbers in Chinese Culture
Different cultures have different number
associations. For example, in many countries, the number 七[qī] (7) is
regarded as lucky number, whereas the number 十三[shí sān] (13) is
considered to be unlucky. Likewise, in Chinese culture, people believe that certain numbers have auspicious or inauspicious meanings.
In China, people often avoid the number 四[sì] (4) because it sounds like the word “死 [sĭ]”, which means “death”. Therefore, many numbered product lines skip the number四[sì]. On the other hand, number 六[liù] (6) and number 八[bā] (8) are believed to have auspicious meanings because their names sound similar to the words that have positive meanings in Chinese.
These days, especially among young people, it is popular to express meanings by assembling different numbers in creative ways. For example, “五 二 零”[wŭ èr líng] (5 2 0) represents “我爱你”[wŏ ài nĭ] (I love you), because their sounds are quite similar.

How To Use a Chopsticks Properly: Chopsticks 筷子Etiquette
A lot of people can use Chinese 筷子[kuài zi] (chopsticks), but not necessarily they know the good manners of using筷子[kuài zi]. Today, we are going to talk about筷子[kuài zi] etiquette.
A big taboo of using筷子[kuài zi] is place 筷子[kuài zi] vertically on the bowl. Because it resembles the ritual of incense-burning to the dead. When not using your chopsticks, place them across your bowl or on the chopstick holder.
Also, do not try to use 筷子[kuài zi] to create music with your bowl. Playing with 筷子[kuài zi] is considered bad manners. Actually, it is commonly known as what beggars would do in order to grab attention from passerby.
Moreover, always pick something close to you and try not to dig into the plate and search for a particular ingredient that you like.
Another thing needs to be careful when using筷子[kuài zi] is do not stab food with 筷子[kuài zi] like a spear.
Lastly, try not to drop the chopsticks on the ground. Some elderly people say that it will bring you bad luck while there are some others say that you will be poor if you do so. However, this is a very old tradition. If it happens by accident, just apologize and ask for a replacement.

How To Compliment in Chinese, usage of 哪里哪里 Nă lĭ, Nă lĭ
One of the cultural differences that most
foreigners learn in China is the way of replying to compliments. In
Australia, if someone says you are wearing a nice dress, you would most
likely to say “Thank you”. However, to respond to a compliment like that
in China would be considered slightly prideful, and it would make
people feel more comfortable to be more modest. People think that it
will be helpful for building better interpersonal relationships with
others.
It is almost like there are certain rules
for what is appropriate to say in certain situations. For example, you
are visiting someone’ house for the first time, and you are kind of
expected to say something positive about the house. Such as “it is so
clean and beautiful”, but the host are never supposed to directly accept
the praise. The host is more likely to say something like “oh, I didn’t
get free time to do the cleaning, sorry about the mess”. Even though
she might have worked hard on it all day.
There is a Chinese phrase that is
basically appropriate for all this kind of conversation. That is 哪里哪里
[nă lĭ, nă lĭ]. The direct English translation is “Where, where”, simply
means “no no no, I’m being flattered”. So next time, when Chinese
people compliment your Chinese, use this phrase哪里哪里 [nă lĭ, nă lĭ] and
they will be amazed how idiomatic your Chinese is.
